BUILDING BRIDGES
The success of the programme
is based on the following simple principles:
These are that LAP:
•
Is always one-to-one
•
Is about relationships
•
Builds self-esteem and confidence
•
Takes a creative approach to learning
•
Provides an internationally recognised framework for community
service for Year 12 students
•
Links successfully with local and international curricula
•
Promotes parent and community participation in schools
•
Is a valuable community service programme for students studying
the IB diploma
A programme can proceed when a coordinator assumes the responsibility
for the development, implementation and continuing practice
of the programme. The job of the coordinator may also be assumed
by a management team comprising teaching staff and volunteers.
The
function of the coordinator, or the management team, is to
ensure that the management of the people involved and the
procedures and strategies developed, mirror the philosophy
of the programme, as well as the policies and priorities of
the school.
However,
the task of coordinating a LAP programme is primarily concerned
with people, forging a crucial link between students, volunteers,
schools and the wider community.
Both
practical and people issues involved need to be addressed
and time allowed for these tasks to be completed.
A
series of organisational forms is available for use by coordinators.
The
Volunteer Details
form must be completed by all volunteers. This form
has been approved for use in LAP by the Department of Edcucation
and Children's Services and the Catholic Education Office
in South Australia.

of a LAP programme in a school can be obtained in
